Tom Haines' first solo flight at age 16 was followed by earning a private pilot certificate the next year. After 20 years covering general aviation for AOPA - and after flying and writing about 100 models of aircraft - the fascination from his childhood remains. He owns and regularly flies a Beech A36 Bonanza.
